The investment
The African Development Bank Group approved $33.64 million for the second phase of Rwanda's Centre of Excellence for Biomedical Engineering and e-Health in Kigali Innovation City. The Bank provides $29.85 million and the Government of Rwanda covers the rest. The project runs until 2030 and is implemented through the University of Rwanda.
What it funds
- New training facilities, modern laboratories and advanced medical equipment
- Bachelor's and master's training for 470 students, mainly from Rwanda and other East African Community countries
- PhD and post-doctoral training for University of Rwanda lecturers
- A Biomedical Innovation Park where students, researchers and companies can develop health technologies for local needs
The payoff for hospitals
Hospitals and clinics are expected to gain locally trained specialists who can install, repair and maintain medical equipment. That reduces reliance on foreign technicians and lowers costs.
